About United Arab Emirates for expats
The UAE is one of the most popular destinations for expats worldwide, largely because it levies no personal income tax. What you earn is what you keep, there is no income tax, no capital gains tax, and no withholding on salary.
That said, the UAE is not entirely tax-free. A 9% corporate tax applies to business profits above AED 375,000, introduced in 2023. VAT at 5% applies to most goods and services. And while there are no mandatory social security deductions for expat employees, UAE and GCC nationals contribute to the GPSSA pension system.
The cost of living varies significantly by emirate. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are expensive by global standards, particularly for housing, schooling, and healthcare. Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah are noticeably cheaper but come with longer commutes if you work in Dubai. Many expats underestimate how quickly housing, school fees, and health insurance add up. The headline “zero tax” figure can be misleading without factoring these in.
The UAE dirham (AED) is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of approximately 3.67, which removes currency risk for USD-denominated earners but creates exposure for those paid in GBP or EUR.
Salary & income
The median expat professional salary in the UAE is approximately AED 180,000 per year (around AED 15,000 per month). This figure reflects mid-level professional roles in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Senior and specialist roles in finance, technology, and energy frequently exceed AED 300,000.
Salaries are typically quoted as a monthly gross figure. Most employment packages include a basic salary plus allowances for housing, transport, and sometimes education. The structure matters because end-of-service gratuity (a form of severance pay) is calculated on basic salary only, not the total package.
It is worth noting that while salaries are high in nominal terms, the cost of private healthcare, housing, and education means disposable income is not always as high as the zero-tax headline suggests.
Key things to know
Healthcare in the UAE is predominantly private. Employers are legally required to provide health insurance in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but coverage varies widely. Basic plans may not cover dependants, dental, or maternity, so check your policy carefully. Public healthcare exists but is generally reserved for Emirati nationals.

The climate is hot and humid for much of the year, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C from June to September. Most daily life is air-conditioned. The cooler months (November to March) are when outdoor living becomes comfortable.
