About Estonia for expats
Estonia uses the euro and its personal tax year follows the calendar year. For 2026, resident employee income is taxed at 22% after eligible deductions and the standard basic exemption of €700 per month (€8,400 per year). The standard exemption does not taper as income rises.
Employees pay 1.6% unemployment insurance without a wage ceiling. Funded pension pillar II contributions default to 2% for participating employees, with 4% and 6% options; the calculator also allows 0% for someone who has not joined. These employee contributions are deducted before income tax is calculated.
Employers pay 33% social tax and 0.8% unemployment insurance in addition to gross pay. These are employer costs, not deductions from an employee's take-home pay. This model excludes the minimum employer social-tax base and pension-age exceptions.
Salary & income
Statistics Estonia reported median monthly gross wages of €1,724 in 2025, equivalent to €20,688 over twelve months. This national figure is not a quoted salary for any particular role or city. Source: Statistics Estonia, 5 March 2026.
The calculator models resident employment income for 2026. It does not calculate self-employment or company structures. Monthly results divide annual totals by twelve and do not model irregular payroll periods.
Key things to know
Healthcare coverage and access depend on insurance and residency circumstances. The healthcare indicator is WHO's national UHC service coverage index, not a promise of individual eligibility or a private insurance quote.
