About Romania for expats

Romania uses the Romanian leu (RON) and a calendar tax year. This calculator supports standard resident employees at their main employment for 2026, not self-employment or company-owner income.

The headline income-tax rate is 10%, but it applies after employee pension (CAS, 25%) and health insurance (CASS, 10%) contributions and eligible personal deductions. Most employees therefore retain about 58.5% of gross pay, before whole-leu payroll rounding. CAS and CASS are uncapped in this model.

Salary & income

Gross pay is entered annually, assuming the same salary for all 12 months. Annual totals combine six months at the January–June minimum-wage rules and six at July–December rules. Monthly results show the July–December payroll and need not equal the annual total divided by 12.

The salary illustration annualises Eurostat's 2022 median hourly earnings of RON 27.38 using 2,080 hours. It is not a measured annual median, a current salary survey or a promise about any city or occupation.

The basic personal deduction depends on monthly salary, the minimum wage and qualifying dependants. A separate RON 100 monthly deduction per qualifying child under 18 in school may be claimed by one parent at any salary; confirm eligibility before entering children.

Key things to know

Employee CASS finances the public healthcare system; coverage and access depend on your circumstances. Private medical cover and international insurance should be considered separately.

The minimum gross wage is RON 4,050 for January–June 2026 and RON 4,325 from July. The basic deduction is zero at or above minimum wage plus RON 2,000. Employer CAM is 2.25%, paid in addition to salary, not deducted from take-home.

Under-26 deductions, minimum-wage non-taxable amounts, special working conditions and sector exemptions are outside this calculator. The former IT income-tax exemption was abolished from January 2025. Low-wage estimates may overstate tax where omitted relief applies.

Climate is the World Bank CCKP/CRU 1991–2020 national land-area mean of 10.18°C, not a city forecast. Happiness is the World Happiness Report 2024 life evaluation score of 6.491 out of 10 (rank 32).
