About Hungary for expats
Hungary uses the forint (HUF), with a calendar tax year. Standard employment income in 2026 attracts 15% flat income tax plus 18.5% employee social security contributions, both without a wage ceiling. Most employees therefore keep about 66.5% of gross pay before whole-forint payroll rounding.
Employer social contribution tax (szocho) is 13% on top of gross pay. It is not deducted from an employee's salary. This calculator supports standard insured employees, not self-employment or company structures.
Eligible families can claim generous tax-base allowances. From January 2026, the monthly allowance per eligible child is HUF 133,340 with one dependant, HUF 266,660 with two, or HUF 440,000 with three or more. Unused allowance can reduce the employee contribution, but cannot reduce it below zero or reduce employer szocho.
Salary & income
Enter gross annual salary assuming twelve equal monthly payments. Monthly deductions are rounded to whole forints and annual figures sum twelve payrolls. The 2026 minimum gross wage is HUF 322,800 per month.
The salary illustration annualises Eurostat's 2022 median hourly earnings of HUF 2,240.48 over 2,080 hours. It is not a measured annual median, a current salary survey or a promised salary in Budapest or elsewhere.
Family relief is off by default and assumes one parent claims the full allowance when enabled. The number of total dependants determines the band; only eligible children receive the allowance. Citizenship, family entitlement and the share of income taxable in Hungary must be checked before claiming.
Key things to know
Public healthcare coverage depends on insured status and individual eligibility. The WHO UHC indicator describes national service coverage, not a guarantee of entitlement, waiting times or private cover.

Most UK-only citizens are not eligible; do not assume tax residence alone qualifies you.
Mothers' PIT exemptions include qualifying mothers with three or more children, mothers with two children under 40 from 2026, and mothers under 30. Their family, citizenship and income conditions differ; these exemptions are not modelled here. Under-25, first-marriage and disability relief are also excluded, so eligible employees may take home more than this standard estimate.
Climate is the World Bank CCKP/CRU 1991–2020 national land-area mean of 11.5°C, not a city forecast. Happiness is the World Happiness Report 2024 life evaluation score of 6.017 out of 10 (rank 56). Living costs use national price indices, not measured city rents.
