About North Macedonia for expats
North Macedonia uses the denar (MKD) and a calendar tax year. Ordinary employees pay 28% in mandatory social insurance contributions from their quoted gross salary, followed by 10% flat income tax on the remainder after the personal tax reduction. Most employees keep about 65% of gross pay, with the tax reduction improving the percentage at lower salaries.
Contributions are included in gross salary, not added to it. There are no additional employer social contributions in this model: employer cost equals gross salary. Only standard Employee income is supported, not self-employment or company structures.
The 2026 personal tax reduction is MKD 10,932 per month. Contributions are capped at a monthly base of MKD 1,106,256 in the May–June 2026 reference. UJP determines the base from the average wage published in January; check the applicable base when planning future payrolls.
Salary & income
Enter gross annual salary, spread evenly across twelve months. Monthly results show Jul–Dec 2026 payroll and contribution rates. Annual results combine six months under Jan–Jun rates and six under Jul–Dec rates, with aggregate contributions and income tax rounded to whole denars for each payroll. The 2026 minimum gross wage reference is MKD 38,507 per month.
The salary reference annualises Eurostat's 2022 median hourly earnings of MKD 239.95 using 2,080 hours. It is an older hourly-pay reference, not a verified 2026 annual median salary.
The minimum contribution base is approximately MKD 34,570, or 50% of the reference average wage. Minimum-base adjustments are outside this ordinary full-time salary model; part-time and unusually low salaries require individual payroll advice.
Key things to know
Health insurance and additional workplace-injury health insurance are withheld as part of the employee's 28% contributions. Registration, insured status and access to care should be checked separately when relocating.

The World Happiness Report 2024 records a life-evaluation score of 5.369/10; neither figure is a forecast of an individual's experience.
The denar's exchange rate is closely managed against the euro. Comparisons use the existing dated reference FX table, not a live rate; users can override their own assumed exchange rate.
Whole-denar payroll rounding may create a one-denar difference between individually rounded contribution components and the rounded 28% total. The breakdown reconciles that difference explicitly. This calculator does not model special contribution categories, benefits, non-wage income or a change in salary during the year.
